Apprenticeship Program
Thinking of becoming an electrician?
Electrical Energy Group offers apprenticeships for those looking to do electrical work. Students must complete both in-class and on-the-job training. We give you the opportunity to watch experts onsite and get a chance to learn hands-on. On-the-job training under the supervision of experienced electricians.
An electrician must have good manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination. He or she must be physically fit and have a good sense of balance. Because an electrician must be able to identify wires by color, good color vision is necessary.
In addition to those physical abilities, training, and a license, there are also certain soft skills or personal qualities, one needs to succeed in this occupation. Strong troubleshooting skills allow an electrician to figure out the cause of problems and the best way to fix them. Critical thinking skills help with this endeavor, as well, since they allow him or her to evaluate the pros and cons of possible solutions.
To become a licensed electrician you’ll need to complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology. There are a range of electrician courses on offer with TAFE NSW, but with no formal entry requirements, the Cert III is most suitable for someone just starting out. It’s a four-year course, which involves both on-the-job and off-the-job training. Completing the Cert III qualifies you as a general electrician or electrical tradesperson in Australia. It’s also a handy pathway to the Certificate IV in Electrotechnology, which qualifies you as a system (special class) electrician.
